Position Available: Winery Director

Our mid-sized premium winery, established in 1995, is located in the Kakheti region of the Republic of Georgia, the cradle of winemaking civilisation with over 8000 years of oenological activity. With 35 Ha of established vineyard in premium appellations, and a fast growing market for its wines in East Asia, we are engaging in an ambitious expansion to present our wines to the world. We are seeking an experienced Winery Director who is keen to take on this challenge.

An experienced winemaker, the Winery Director will be responsible for continuing the training of our very enthusiastic local winemaking team, and will be directing the winemaking team's activities. You will be working very closely with our Vineyard Director, an expert in Precision Viticulture methodologies, to produce outstanding wines from both European and indigenous varietals. Our wines are 100% produced from our three vineyards in the Alazani Valley, adjacent to the winery, and we have complete control over quality. You will be responsible for introducing innovative new premium table wines to our range, still and sparkling, including Shiraz, Tempranillo, Durif, Touriga Nacional, Georgian Tavkveri, Armenian Areni Noir and Turkish Emir. Our heritage super-premium reds (Saperavi) and whites (Rkatsiteli/Mtsvane), will continue as the cornerstone of our collection under your management. You will also be single-handedly restoring the reputation of our appellation for top quality fortified wines, the most celebrated in the region in the 19th Century, targeted at our elite hotel guests and the UK market.

Ideally you will have experience in producing premium and super-premium red wines in warm climate zones. It would be desirable if you also have solid experience in production of sparkling and fortified wines, but we can secure you accomplished supporting consultants from Australia and Europe if that is not the case. We will provide you with an authoritative local winemaking consultant, trained in Australia, to orient you with the attributes of our indigenous varieties for the first two seasons, and in addition to provision of a bilingual personal assistant, we will be providing intensive local language training on an ongoing basis.

Under your management, our existing winery will be progressively decommissioned and a new winery, purpose-built to accommodate your needs for small-batch premium and super-premium wines, will be developed and commissioned by you. You will be responsible for the implementation of HACCP and ISO 22000 procedures, and the training of all personnel accordingly. As area under vine increases substantially over the next 2 years, your planning capabilities for handling increased quantities of grape over time, while maintaining quality and attention to detail, will be a key attribute.

You will be working closely with our Export Director as well as our representatives of our distributors in Japan, Taiwan, Mainland China and Hong Kong. Our 32-room 5-star hotel adjacent to the winery will provide a steady stream of high-end retail trade for the Cellar Door crew under your direction.

Our New World Wine Technology Centre, co-operating with major research and extension centres from Australia, South Africa and the United States, will provide you with many opportunities to interact on a regular basis with some of the world's most talented vignerons, winemakers and wine technologists, as well as the most accomplished and forward-thinking winemakers from Georgia, Turkey, Armenia, Russia, Ukraine and the EU.
